Before setting off for the Apuseni Mountains this time, I looked for a guide about them. Something that would tell me what to expect, show me the places, and speak about the people. I found almost nothing. Just a few scattered lines in general guides about Romania. Nothing that would make you dream about the Apuseni or want to pack your bags and head there.
I was travelling with someone who had joined me on another photography trip before, and I told them, half-jokingly, that this time we were stepping a little into the unknown. We had no big expectations. We simply set out to discover.
And maybe that was the beauty of it. We found places that took our breath away, warm-hearted people who welcomed us as if they had known us forever, and simple yet beautiful stories that stayed with us long after we had left.
It’s a shame that the Apuseni are not better known or more widely promoted, because they are truly a wonderful place.
Or perhaps… perhaps it’s better this way.
