I am often asked why almost all the people in my pictures are old. Or why don’t I take photos also of the young people of the villages I go to. The answer is rather simple: many of the Romanian villages are currently inhabited prevailing by elderly. Young people are almost all gone. Most of them, abroad. Romania ranks second after Syria in the classifications of the countries with the largest migration outflows. There is a war in Syria. And there are economic reasons that chase Romanians away from their country. The Romanian villages are left only with elderly to do all the work. It is heart-breaking to watch them, whom one would expect to see finding some peace at this old age, having to work from from sunup to sundown, feeding animals, bailing the hay, working the garden …. The economic situation in Romania broke families apart.
